Tree Research At Karuna.

"Grafting the Karuna way" an article about the propagation of apple trees published in the Permaculture Association's Newsletter summer 2010, please click here to read userfiles/files/GRAFTING the Karuna way0001.pdf

The aim of Karuna is to establish an arboretum as well as nature reserve and mixed woodland to be managed . Different trees require different kinds of special attention in different conditions.I have learned that tree guards are best done away with after the first 2-3 years.

Rabits are only rarely spotted at the lower end of the site.Possibly due to the fact that  Karuna is above the snow line and there has been little all year round wild food available here and that Karuna is like an Island with two asphelt roads on its flanks.

Here we have a young  Alder (Alnus) tree  which was blown to the ground then later picked up and supported by a post and rope.I insist on using Rubber innertube to to act as a buffer. Also the rope is tied loose in a figure eight shape so as not to restrict growth.

This is a close up of the same Alder tree.Observe that the base of the trunk is rooting  due to spiral guard and grass growth.Spiral guards often cause more harm than good. They create limitation of growth at the trees base, weakening the tree at its crucial point .

Sequoiadendron Gigantium also badly damaged by spiral tree guard.

Looking closer at the Sequoia we can even observe the spiral markings. I later supported this tree with a post ,rope & rubber.Strong winds could cause serious damage due to its heaveyness.

This tree guard was used without cable ties.Only a cane was used at the time of planting. If you must use spiral guards for protection better do it this way.The tree isn't strangled as the tree grows.

Poplus Gavar. This outrageous damage is a result of my not being able to keep on top of things, It has since become a priority to keep a check on the situation. In any case only in exceptional circumstances should  trees be strapped and supported. This tree was already 16 ft high when planted, hence the need for support.

The Poplus Gaver is one of the fastest growing poplars,so this tree will heal/calous over in a very short time.

This Alder tree strangled at the very base, expanded above the guard and easily blown over in August 2010.Disapointing as it was a 16ft tree.

Another Alder wich was blown down last year, staked to assist its development but the wrong kind of tie used to secure it.Ties should alow for plenty of growth!(2010).
